SAN DIEGO (Jan. 23, 2020) - The national building industry’s most prestigious awards have named the Davidson Collection at Delta Coves on Bethel Island, Calif. as the nation’s Community of the Year, citing elevated architecture, interior design and landscaping in a one-of-a-kind waterfront setting on the California Delta.

Built by Del Mar, Calif.-based Davidson Communities, the Davidson Collection at Delta Coves was honored at the Jan. 21 National Sales and Marketing Awards (“Nationals”), presented by the National Association of Home Builders in Las Vegas. This year’s competition attracted more than 1300 entries submitted by the best new home builders in North America.

Judges said of the Davidson Collection: “Placemaking, storytelling, great design and execution were the keys to success for this incredible community.”

Davidson Communities opened its 42-home enclave last September when master developer DMB Development unveiled the first phase of the 560-home Delta Coves master-planned community. All homes at Delta Coves sit atop a double levee, adjacent to a tranquil manmade lagoon, just four miles from fast water and boating access to San Francisco Bay.

Every Davidson Collection home includes a private dock and generous outdoor spaces with covered patios and balconies to shade from the sun.  Six two-story floorplans range from 2,849 to 4,264 square feet, with up to five bedrooms and 5.5 baths. Kitchens and all social areas open to the docks and blue water views with expansive glass in every room. Prices range from $1 - $1.6 million.

“For Davidson Collection at Delta Coves to be chosen as the best new community in the country is a high honor,” said Bill Davidson, who as president of Davidson Communities has delivered over 6,000 new homes since 1978.

“We’ve been building homes for California families for over 40 years, and I’ve never seen a community like this. Where else could you live on the water in an elegant new home, with an opportunity to fish off your own dock, waterski, wakeboard or take your boat up to San Francisco? We are constantly surprised by the abundance of marine mammals and sea birds in what is essentially our backyards. There is no other new home community in California that exists with these natural amenities.”

“Delta Coves is a terrific story of resilience and rebirth,” said Tim Sullivan, senior managing principal at Meyers Research and 2020 host of the Nationals awards. “The property languished for years after the former owner, Lehman Brothers, was unable to bring it to market. Over the past three years, Davidson Communities brought a fresh look to a site that offered some very unique opportunities: ready-to-develop lots with water frontage and individual docks. The community is now something special.”

Also at the Nationals, the Davidson Collection at Delta Coves won top honors for best landscape of a community, and best model home from 3,501 to 4,000 square feet. The project won a silver award as a finalist in nine other categories.

Robert Hidey Architects of Irvine, Calif. was the project architect, with interior design and merchandising by Design Line Interiors, Inc. of Del Mar, Calif. Environmental Foresight of Walnut Creek, Calif. was project landscape architect.

“Our team created Delta Coves as a gathering place for multi-generational families or close clusters of friends; like an upscale summer camp loaded with amenities and efficiencies,” said Lenette Hewitt, sales & marketing director at Davidson Communities. “With master suites both upstairs and downstairs, we designed the plans to accommodate many different configurations, as well as an opportunity to age-in-place. To maximize views, Davidson also created an optional “crow’s nest” atop certain floorplans with optional bunk rooms, bedroom suites or game rooms.”

“The design of the Davidson Collection embraces and promotes the benefits of life on the Delta, from an active water-sports lifestyle to the peaceful serenity of living right on the water,” said Bob Hidey, president of Robert Hidey Architects. “Large covered outdoor spaces on both floors provide protection from the sun, encouraging homeowners to be outside next to the water’s edge.”

“Delta Coves is about family fun and adventure,” said Dawn Davidson, CEO and founder of Design Line Interiors. “The Delta lifestyle inspired the team to collaborate on some surprising amenities like the “snack alley,” a long narrow space with large sliding doors that open to the water. We imagined kids and adults running to the snack alley after wakeboarding or skiing, grabbing a popsicle, a cold beer, or a snack, and dashing back out for more fun playing in the water. The Davidson Collection showcases a resort-like vibe in homes designed to overflow with family and friends.”

The focal point of Delta Coves – and an exclusive benefit of homeownership – is the Island Camp, a 15,000-square-foot private club featuring a yoga room, fitness center, and outdoor area with lounge seating, games, a lap-pool, jacuzzi, barbecues and firepits on a sandy, park-like pavilion. Grand opening of the Island Camp is expected within 60 days.

Homeowners commuting to Delta Coves from Oakland, San Jose or San Francisco can utilize a new Bay Area Mass Transit (BART) station in Antioch, just 15 minutes away. From Delta Coves, it takes approximately 70 minutes to drive to San Francisco.

This is the second time in recent years that Davidson Communities has won top honors from the Nationals. In 2017, the Community of the Year award was presented to The Oaks Farms in San Juan Capistrano, Calif., where Davidson built 32 homes overlooking an historic equestrian training facility once owned by Joan Irvine Smith, great granddaughter of California pioneer James Irvine.
